The North Country Growers Greenhouse Facility is located in Berlin, New Hampshire, approximately 180 miles north of Boston, MA and 90 miles northwest of Portland, ME. The 170 acre site was purchased from the city of Berlin in January 2021.
The North Country Growers facility is slated to be New England's first greenhouse utilizing combined heat and power (CHP) technology. The first phase of the project includes 10 acres of indoor salad greens facilities and the second will build another 10 acres of indoor salad green facilities. When operational, the site will have 83 full time employees.
The project has received all necessary New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services permits, including air, alteration of terrain, shoreland, driveway, water, and sewer, as well as all necessary local permits including subdivision and planning board approvals. The property was purchased in January 2021, and the excavation and site prep for Phase 1 of the project began in August 2021. In November 2022, we broke ground on the greenhouse foundations. In 2023, the first 10-acre greenhouse and work hall facility completed construction. In 2024, we began operations and the production of salad greens. By utilizing combined heat and power, hydroponic irrigation, enhanced lighting, supplemental carbon dioxide, and advanced control systems, the North Country Growers greenhouses are expected to enhance yields.
As part of its Rural Development Business Program, the USDA grants projects like North Country Growers guaranteed business loans.
Following passage of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Berlin, NH was designated as an Opportunity Zone by New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu. Investments in Opportunity Zones provide a tax incentive for investors to re-invest their unrealized capital gains into dedicated Opportunity Funds.
